Reading Challenge

Please continue to share and read books together throughout the holidays, see if your child/children can identify letter sounds within words and sound them out. Please ask them to turn the pages themselves and ask them to give detailed information about things they see in the pictures.

For children who are beginning to read three letter words, can they identify what word it is in the book.

Please read your child's favourite book with them and ask them questions on the book afterwards.

Please continue to talk about the summer season and how we need to keep safe during hot weather.

Mrs Madden's Phonic Challenge

Please ensure that you continue to work with your child/children throughout the holidays on the information given below:

Please continue to revise all phase two sounds

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/T-L-015-Phase-2-Sound-Mat

Continue to practise writing letter formation in correspondence to letter sounds, for example show your child the letter "S" now ask them to write that letter sound down and so on.

For children that can write three letter words, please use all the letter sounds on the phase 2 sound mat and say your own three letter word then ask your child to write that word down.

Please continue to practise tricky words once your child is being consistent with knowing their letter sounds.

Phase 2 tricky words are: I, no, go, to, the, into. (practice spelling and reading these words over and over) they are called tricky words as they are not phonetic.

Please continue to use Discovery Espresso and watch the video's linked to the letter sounds that your child is revising.

If your child struggles to write their name please continue to work with them on this during the holidays.

Mrs Crowther's Phonic Challenge

Please introduce the letter sound "Z"

Practise writing the letter sound "Z" and find words that have the letter "Z" in them.

Zip, zig, zag, zap, zoo.

For the children that would like to practise writing a simple sentence;

The zoo is big.

A fat zip.

I can zap.

Please do not worry if your child seems to struggle with finger spaces and capital letters, it takes lots of practise and patience. As long as they are hearing most of the sounds that you are giving to them and they can write the corresponding letter sound down, they are doing a fantastic job!!

Please continue to work on all of the above during the holidays revising both phase 2 and the letters we have started on phase 3 such as j, v, x, y, z.

Please continue to revise the tricky words in phase 2: I, no, go, to, the, into and try to use them in simple sentences as well as continue to  practise reading them.

Please continue to watch the phonic sound video's on "Discovery espresso" as well as playing the blending and segmenting games.

Maths Challenge

Please continue to practise saying numbers up to 20.

Ask your child to count out items to 10, when they have completed that task confidently, ask them to count out various amounts up to 20.

Please revise all 2D shapes: circle, square, triangle, hexagon, pentagon, oval and rectangle.

Please continue to look at 3D shapes: Sphere, cube, cuboid, pyramid , cone and triangular prism.

Practice recognising numbers to 10 initially then 20 when placed out of order.

Practise writing numbers 0-10 then 10-20.

Finally, just to say a big thank you for your continued support throughout your child/children's time in Nursery we have really missed you all and we are really looking forward to seeing you all again in September. Please continue to stay safe and keep smiling!!
